Significance of Dodital Lake
Dodital Lake is known as Dhundi Tal among locals. Another name of this lake is Ganesh Tal. Uttarakhand is called the land of Gods and many stories related to Gods and Goddess are prevalent here since mythological times. It is believed that the gods have wandered in the beautiful land of Uttarakhand. Every city and every village here is as important from the religious point of view as it is from the natural point of view.
Dodital is also not untouched by this. Apart from its beauty and tranquility, Dodital is a major religious place associated with Lord Ganesha and his mother Parvati. It is believed that Lord Ganesha was born here on the banks of Dodital Lake.
A story related to the birth of Lord Ganesha is very popular. It is believed that once Mother Parvati, before taking a bath, made an idol of a boy out of her bathing pack. The same idol of Ubtan was Lord Ganesha.

Assi Ganga and Dodital Lake
The Assi Ganga river originates from the Dodital lake. Assi Ganga is a stream made up of 80 small streams of water and for this reason this river is named Assi Ganga. Assi Ganga's stream goes towards Uttarkashi and joins Bhagirathi river about 4 km before Uttarkashi.

Trout fish, which is a freshwater fish, is found in Dodital. The name of this lake is Dodital after the local name of this fish. These fish are found in large quantities in this lake and that is why this lake is also known for fishing activity.

Dodital is the main tourist place of Uttarakhand and Uttarkashi where tourist activities take place almost throughout the year. The major activity is trekking which starts from Sangam Chatti, 24 km before here. This track is not very difficult, that's why people are often seen tracking in small groups apart from big tourist groups. Agora village comes in the track from Sangam Chatti to Dodital Lake. It is a small beautiful village which looks like a garden of flowers. Homestays are also available in this village. It is the first base for the trek up to Dodital Lake.

This lake freezes in winter and the mountains surrounding the lake are also covered with snow.

How to reach Dodital Lake
By Flight
If you are traveling from within the country or abroad then Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport is the nearest airport to Uttarkashi. The distance from Dehradun to Uttarkashi is about 140 km. This distance from Dehradun Airport to Uttarkashi can be covered by state transport bus or by taxi from the airport.
Sangamchatti is the place to reach Dodital Lake which can be reached by shared jeep or taxi. The distance of Sangamchatti is about 14 kilometers from Uttarkashi, which takes about 40 minutes to cover. From Sangam Chatti, trek goes till Dodital Lake.
By Train
One can reach Uttarkashi by road from Dehradun or Rishikesh railway station by state transport bus or taxi. Dehradun and Rishikesh are well connected by the railway network of India and all major railway stations in the country have direct or connected trains to these stations. Uttarkashi is not connected to the train network so Dehradun or Rishikesh are the nearest stations.
