The lingam dedicated to Lord Shiva inside the Kashi Vishwanath Temple is about 56 cm high and is called Dakshinmukhi as it faces south. The idols of Goddess Parvati and Lord Ganesha are installed in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple and Nandi is installed in the outer chamber. A small temple is dedicated to sage Markandeya. A mythological story related to Kashi Vishwanath Temple and Markandeya Rishi is also told. It is said that the death of sage Markandeya was certain at a very young age. Sage Markandeya was doing penance here and when the time came for his death, seeing Yamraj coming, he went and sat near the Shivling established here and started praying to Lord Shiva by holding the Shivling. Seeing this, Yamraj went back from there and Lord Shiva blessed sage Markandeya with a long life.
History of Kashi Vishwanath Mandir Uttarkashi
This temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is said to have been built by sage Parashurama during the mythological period. The present form of the temple was built in 1857 by Maharani Khaneti, the wife of Raja Sudarshan Shah of Tehri. This temple is a sample of traditional hill architecture.
