It is said that when King Bhagiratha succeeded in bringing river Ganga from heaven to earth after intense penance, the Saptarishis were doing penance here on the way. Seeing this, he prayed to the river Ganga and then the river Ganga divided its stream into seven parts in order not to disturb Saptarshis. There are seven small islands here, the places of these seven sages / Saptarshis, which can be seen when the amount of water decreases in summer.

Another mythological story explains the reason for the name of the river Ganga at this place as Neel Dhara.
