Chakrata is situated between Tons and Yamuna river. In many places the river Yamuna can also be seen flowing in the valley. Tiger Falls is the biggest tourist attraction of Chakrata. This is a 320 feet high clear water fall in which water falls directly towards the ground from such a height. It is the highest straight water fall in India. Tourists cannot drive their cars to the main waterfall to reach Tiger Falls. After parking the cars outside the entry gate of Tiger Falls, tourists can go inside after buying tickets. The ticket price for tourists is Rs.30 per person and for children it is Rs.20 per ticket.

To reach Tiger Falls, one has to trek for about 3 km. This path is a bit difficult, so one should come here wearing shoes, otherwise there may be a chance of getting hit by stones on the way. It is a very beautiful experience to watch Tiger Falls. Tourists can also take a bath in this waterfall. People are only allowed to swim if they are wearing swimsuits. If you want, you can stop and take a snack near the Tiger Waterfall.

Chirmiri Top Chakrata

Chirmiri Top or Chilmiri Top, it is known by both the names. This is the highest point of Chakrata where people come to watch the sunset. It is very beautiful to see the sun setting behind the mountains and tourists definitely come here to experience it. During the rainy season it is often foggy and the sunset is not visible.

The winter line of the Himalayas can also be seen from this point of Chakrata.

Budher  Caves Chakrata

Budher Caves or Moily Caves are situated at a distance of about 30 km from Chakrata in the Budher forest. A German traveler / explorer discovered these caves and these caves are named behind that German explorer to be known as Moily Caves. According to the folk tales of Chakrata, these caves were built by the Pandavas during Dwapar Yug , after escaping from Lakshagriha and when they passed through here.

Budher cave can be entered only for a few meters. Due to the darkness inside, these caves have not been explored yet. Although tourists go inside for a few meters, but it is not possible to go further inside these caves.

Kalsi is a small village on the way from Dehradun to Chakrata. This village is famous for the rock edicts of Emperor Ashoka, the great king of the Maurya dynasty. Ashoka Pillar can also be seen here. Tourists often visiting Chakrat,a stop for a while at Kalsi village to see these stone inscriptions.

Devban Forest Chakrata

Devban means "God's own Forest". Devban is a dense forest of deodar posts. Tourists come here for trekking and bird watching. If you want to see nature and animals living in the mountains closely, then you should come for trekking in Devban during the morning hours. Vyas Choti / Peak is situated in Devban. A very beautiful and wonderful view of the Himalayas can be seen after reaching the peak of Vyas Choti / peak .

Why this peak is named Vyas, it is said that sage Ved Vyas stayed here and it was here that he composed the great epic like Mahabharata. This peak is called Vyas peak after his name.

Ram Tal Garden Chakrata

Ram Tal is a horticulture site which is famous as a picnic spot. The site has a small pond which is filled with water during the rainy season. This pond often remains dry during the summers. If you have come to Chakrata during the rainy season then Ram Tal is a must visit. There is also Ram Tal resorts on the Ram Tal site itself.

Koti Kanasar

Koti Kanasar is a small village about 20 kms from Chakrata. This village is known for its deodar forest and meadows/bugyal but the main attraction of this village is a huge deodar tree which is the oldest and the biggest tree in this area. The outer circumference of this tree is 6.5 meters and hence this tree is a special attraction.

Nestled in the dense oak forests, the Kimona Falls is a small pure water waterfall that is not at all easy to reach. Since Covid, the activities on this waterfall have stopped due to less number of tourists reaching here. Adventure activities like climbing and rappelling were once done on this waterfall.

Thana Danda Peak Chakrata

Thana Danda Peak, located about 15 km from Chakrata, is a peak which is not very famous and that is why very few tourists reach here. This peak is quite popular among the tourists doing camping and trekking. It is a very beautiful experience to see the view of the Himalayas from Thana Danda Peak.

Chinta Haran Mahadev Temple Chakrata

This temple of Lord Shiva is situated in Chakrata. This temple is known as Chinta Haran Mahadev Temple. You can be free from your worries by having darshan of Lord Shiva in this temple.

These temples built in the small towns of Uttarakhand are not commercial like the rest of the tourist pulse and that is why visiting these temples really gives peace of mind.

Moila Top can be reached by trekking for 2 km. It is located near the Budher Caves. It is an easy track. if you are planning to go for this track, you will be leaving the vehicle on the road near Budher Caves.

During winter season, tourists can witness snow on the Moila Peak. Beautiful views of the Himalayas can be seen from here in summers. It is better to head back to the staying place from Moila track before dusk as the road up to this point is not very well maintained and driving in the dark can be a hassle.

History of Chakrata

Chakrata is also known as Jaunsar - Bawar. Jaunsar - Bawar is an area in which the upper parts of the valley are called Bawar and the lower parts are called Jaunsar. Although all the residents here speak and understand Hindi, but their main language is Jaunsari.

Before the British, it used to be a part of the Sirmaur state of Himachal. Himachal Pradesh is in the west of this valley and Garhwal is in the east. Tons river in the west and Yamuna river in the east tell its boundary.

Chakrata was established as an army base during the British rule. It is still a cantonment zone where no foreign national is allowed to enter.

How to reach Chakrata

By Flight to Chakrata

Chakrata can be reached only by road. There are good roads from Delhi to here and often tourists from Delhi and nearby places prefer to come here by their own car. Dehradun Airport is the nearest airport to Chakrata Hill Station. The distance from Dehradun to Chakrata is about 90 km. Dehradun airport in Uttarakhand has flight connectivity from Delhi. By Train to Chakrata

Chakrata is a small hill station which is not connected to the train network. The nearest railway station is Dehradun, which is located at a distance of about 90 kms. One can reach Chakrata from Dehradun by bus and taxi.

Many tourists who are interested in motor biking also come by bike ride till Chakrata.

Chakrata receives good snowfall in winters. It is very cold here in winter. The weather is pleasant in summer.
