Kashipur is a city located in the Udham Singh Nagar district of Uttarakhand which is known for its industrial expansion. Although this city situated in the Terai / low land area is not a very famous tourist attraction of Uttarakhand, but since the only IIM of Uttarakhand is established here, Kashipur city has become a modern tourist attraction.

Kashipur is a historical city. The ruins of the 7th century buildings of Emperor Harsha can be seen here and it is said that the city of Kashipur was also associated with the Pandavas of Mahabharat from Dwapar Yuga . History of Kashipur

Kashipur city is about 5000 years old. The Drona Sagar located here was a gift for guru Dronacharya, the guru of the Pandavas, as Gurudakshina.

The present Kashipur was founded by Kashinath Adhikari, the governor of the Chand dynasty of the Kumaon state in the 17th century. Later it came under British rule. After the independence of India, it was a part of the state of Uttar Pradesh and after the creation of Uttarakhand in 2000, Kashipur became part of the state of Uttarakhand.

 Mythological Significance- Kashipur

Kashipur was called Dakini during Mahabharata period. At that time, this place was a forest in the Terai region where Hidimb and Hidimba, demon brothers and sisters used to live. Here Bhima married  Hidimba and their son Ghatotkacha was born. Adi Guru Shankaracharya called it "Dakiniyam Bhimashankaram".

Why name Kashipur

The city was named Kashipur after the name of Kashinath Adhikari, who was the governor here during the reign of Chand Vash of Kumaon state.

Drona Sagar is named after the name of guru Dronacharya, the guru of the Pandavas. Drona Sagar lake is the most famous tourist attraction of Kashipur which is famous for its scenic view and mythological importance. It is said that this lake was built by the Pandavas to give to their Guru as Gurudakshina. There are many temples built around Drona Sagar. Apart from its religious importance, this lake is also a famous picnic spot due to its beautiful and serene environment. People often come here for picnics in good weather.

This temple was built around 302 AD. Shri Moteshwar Mahadev Temple is also known as Bhimashankar Mahadev Temple.

This temple is believed to be one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The Shivling located in this temple is one of the largest Shivling in India. The height of this Shivling is continuously increasing. It is believed that earlier this Shivling was not so big in size but due to continuous growth it has now reached the second floor of the temple.

The temple consists of a Bhairav ​​Nath temple and a kund known as Shiv Ganga Kund. It is believed that Guru Dronacharya inspired Bhima to rebuild this temple of Mahadev. That is why this temple is called Bhimshankar Mahadev Temple.

Ulta Kila

Ulta Qila is a historical heritage site currently under the supervision of the Archaeological Survey of India. This fort is called upside down fort because it is believed that the foundation of this fort is hanging in the air while the fort is buried inside the ground.
