Maya Devi Mandir is a Shaktipeeth located in Haridwar. Legend has it that once Sati was insulted for being uninvited in a yagya organized by her father Daksha and she sacrificed her life in the same Havankund fire. When Lord Shiva, her husband, came to know about this, he became very angry and started wandering with the dead body. Seeing all this, Lord Vishnu tried to free Shiva from this sorrow. Lord Vishnu threw his Chakra and it made Sati's dead body cut into small pieces. Because of this, the pieces of Sati's dead body fell at different places. Sati's navel and heart had fallen at this place. In Puranas, this place has been considered as the giver of salvation and the center of the universe.
Maya Devi Temple is ancient. There has been a temple from ever. The present temple is an upgrade to the temple which was built in the 11th century.
