Pithoragarh Fort Uttarakhand | Pithogarh Kila

 Pithoragarh Fort is located in Pithoragarh city of Uttarakhand state. Pithoragarh Fort : Different Names

Pithoragarh Fort is also known by some other names. This fort has been given names like Gorkha Fort, Loudon Fort, Sorgarh Fort, Bowli Garh Fort, London Fort. All these names have changed from time to time due to political changes in history of Pithoragarh. It is also said that this fort was made the capital by Emperor Prithviraj Chauhan and due to the influence of his name, it was called Pithoragarh Fort.

Pithoragarh was known as Sor Ghati/ Valley in ancient times. The word Sor means lake. It is said that once upon a time there were seven lakes here, which gradually dried up over time and a plateau was formed over. Due to this plateau land, this place was named Pithoragarh.

Pithoragarh Fort : Construction

Regarding the construction of Pithoragarh fort, historians believe that the construction of this fort was started by King Piru alias Prithvi Gusain of Chand dynasty around 1779, later this fort was named Pithoragarh fort after his name. In 1790, the Gorkhas defeated the kings of the Chand dynasty and destroyed the fort and captured Kumaon.

Later, the Gorkhas repaired it and built this fort on the highest hill there in 1791 and named it Gorkha Fort. It is believed that the Gorkhas had built this fort on the highest hill there with a view to complete security.

There are two main gates to enter this fort, not very big. There are two floors inside this fort in which 15 rooms have been built. Looking at the design of the rooms in the fort, it seems that their design is very similar to the buildings built in Nepal. This fort was built for the residence of soldiers and nobles. There is also a basement inside the Pithoragarh fort, which was used by soldiers for storage.

Keeping in mind the security in Pithoragarh Fort, many secret doors and many routes were also made. This fort reflects the war policy of that time. Here 152 holes were made in the fort wall to fire long guns and the specialty of these holes was that no harm could be done inside the fort from outside. In order to keep the security system of the fort perfect, a complete arrangement was made here for the soldiers to fire guns both while sitting and lying down.

Pithoragarh fort is made of stone, red sawdust has been used in it. Surkhi Chura acts as a kind of cement which works to connect the stones placed there. Soldiers who were martyred in the First World War have been mentioned on a plaque inside the fort. It is known from this inscription that how many soldiers from the surrounding areas had participated in the World War and the soldiers who were martyred in the World War are also mentioned here.

Pithoragarh Fort - History

The Pithoragarh Fort was built in the year 1778-1779 and after about 10 years it was taken over by the Gurkha army. Later in 1815, during the British rule on India, it was taken over by the British. Udaipur Kot, Uncha Kot, Bhatduni Kot, Vellore Kot, Bal Kot, Dungar Kot, Sahaj Kot could be easily seen from this Pithoragarh fort and all of them be ruled from there.

A treaty was established between the British and the Gorkhas regarding this fort, which was named the Sangolli Treaty. The British occupied this fort for 135 years and used it as a tehsil. During the same time the name of Pithoragarh Fort was changed to London Fort. Later, when the country became independent, that rule ended on this fort.

In 2018, the Uttarakhand Tourism Department took over this fort and declared it a historical heritage for Pithoragarh. Only then the work of making a museum here also started.

There is a ticket system to enter inside the fort, the price of which is only 20 rupees. The time to visit the fort or the opening time of the fort is from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm. Tourists can visit the fort from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm and get familiar with this history of Pithoragarh.

Pithoragarh Fort - Museum

A craft center was built in the museum established inside the fort, where hand-made things are displayed. The masks found in the fairs in the hilly region can also be seen in this museum. Some copper plates, ancient coins and some books etc. are also equipped in the museum, introducing tourists to the history of the fort.

The best time to visit Pithoragarh Fort is from April to October, although it is not very safe to visit in August due to monsoon. There is a lot of snow here in winters and the temperature drops a lot.

By Rail

The nearest railway station to Pithoragarh is at Tanakpur. The distance of Pithoragarh from Tanakpur railway station is about 138 km and bus and taxi facilities are also available for commuting. Delhi to Pithoragarh is approximately 457 km by road.

The nearest airport to reach Pithoragarh by flight is at Pantnagar. It is about 241 km from Pithoragarh in Nainital district. There is also a Naini Saini airstrip in Pithoragarh where helicopter facility is also available from Dehradun and Pant Nagar, although this facility is closed now.
