History - Mussoorie Tourist Places

Mussoorie is an old city situated in the Garhwal region of the Himalayas. Mussoorie was discovered by a British Captain of the East India Company in 1825. Captain Frederick Young had come to Mussoorie for the shooting of the game. He had built a shooting box for hunting in the forests here. Since then Mussoorie started being developed as a city.

During the British rule, a convalescent center for soldiers was built in the city of Mussoorie. During the same period, liquor making also started here. India's first distillery 'The Old Brewery' was started here by Sir Henry

Mussoorie is a beautiful tourist destination where there are many famous places to visit. One of such places to visit in Mussoorie is Kempty Falls. Kempty Falls, located at a distance of about 14 kilometers from Mussoorie city, is a beautiful waterfall which is surrounded by high mountains on all sides. Kempty Falls, situated at a height of about 4500 feet above sea level, is a very beautiful view of nature. Due to the water falling from a great height at Kempty Falls, it gets divided into five different streams. Tourists like to bathe in the spring water here and spend some time in this beautiful nature.

There are no tickets of any kind to visit Kempty Falls but if you want to come here by ropeway then you will have to buy a ticket for that. The price of ropeway ticket for Kempty Falls is decided according to the season. Most tourists like to come to Mussoorie from April to June when it is very hot in North India and from September to November, just before winter. A round trip ticket via ropeway to Kempty Falls is around Rs 150 per person during peak tourist season. During off-season the same ropeway ticket costs around Rs 80.

Tourists can also go swimming here. Apart from this, you can also do adventure activities like boating, zip-line.

Cloud End - Mussoorie Tourist Places

Clouds End is a beautiful historical attraction located in Mussoorie. Mussoorie is surrounded by dense forests of clouds and cedar, just 7 kilometers away from the main city. A heritage home was built here in 1838 by British Major Edmund Swettenham. This building is more than 175 years old and is now famous as the oldest building in Mussoorie. From here, a beautiful view of the snow covered peaks of the Himalayas and the Yamuna river can be seen.

Tourists can do trekking, bird watching and many other activities at Cloud End.

Gun Hill is one of the most prominent attractions for all the tourists visiting Mussoorie. Gun Hill is the second highest mountain in Mussoorie which is situated at a height of about 2024 meters above sea level. During the British rule, a cannon placed here was fired at exactly 12 o'clock to keep track of time, due to which this hill was named Gun Hill. Now it has become the most famous place in Mussoorie where tourists come in large numbers.

The main attraction of Gun Hill is the cable car from where the snow-clad peaks of the Himalayas can be seen. Doon Valley can also be seen from here. The total ticket for coming and going by cable car is Rs 75. Tourists can spend 3 to 4 hours after coming here. Through the telescope installed here, the distant snow covered peaks of the Himalayas can be clearly seen.

Jharipani Waterfall is a beautiful natural waterfall located in Barlow Ganj, Mussoorie. It is not a very famous tourist spot and hence is quiet and untouched. The bush and forest around the waterfall and different species of animals and birds can be seen. The beauty of the bush water waterfall during monsoon is a sight to behold. Water falling from a height looks very attractive. Here tourists can go on a nature track.

There are no tickets etc. for Jharipani Falls and one can come here anytime between 7 am to 6 pm. This is a great place for a picnic.

Laal Tibba - Mussoorie Tourist Places

Lal Tibba is the highest peak of Mussoorie with a height of more than 2275 meters. In the local language, Lal Tibba means red colored mountain. This is the place where beautiful colors of nature can be seen. Sunrise and sunset look very attractive from this place. Lal Tibba is famous for the Japanese telescope which was placed here in 1967. Badrinath, Kedarnath, Bandarpoonch and other Himalayan peaks are clearly visible from here. The peaceful environment here and the surrounding beauty are very much liked by the tourists.

Tourists can reach Lal Tibba by trekking. This track is surrounded by lush green forests. There is no ticket of any kind to visit Lal Tibba.

Tourists can go boating in the lake in the company garden and enjoy activities in the water park. Company Garden also has attractions for tourists like haunted house, wax museum. Here tourists can see about 800 types of flower species.

The Company Garden of Mussoorie was earlier known as the Botanical Garden. This garden is a famous picnic spot in Mussoorie. The ticket for entry into Company Garden is Rs 25 per person. If you want to do some activity in the garden, then you have to buy a separate ticket for it.

Mall Road is about 2 kilometers long in the middle of Mussoorie city and is a famous market of Mussoorie. Mall Road is mainly known for shops, famous cafes and modern hotels. Tourists can often be seen shopping here. In the evening, Mall Road attracts every tourist coming to Mussoorie.

Lake Mist is another beautiful tourist location of Mussoorie. Lake Mist Mussoorie is located at a distance of about 10 kilometers from Mussoorie on the Kempty Road. This lake is a lake formed by the Kempty River where people often come for picnics. There are no entry tickets for Lake Mist but if you want to go boating in the lake then you have to buy a ticket for it. This lake is 8 in the morning. It is open for tourists from 1:30 pm to 6 pm.

Camel's Back Road is a special attraction in Mussoorie which is named for a special reason. This is a 3 kilometer long road and at the end of this road there is a rock whose shape looks like a camel's back. Because of this special rock, this road is known as Camel's Back Road.

Tourists come to walk on Camel's Back Road. Beautiful views of the valley and mountains are visible from here. People also come to this road for horse riding. This is a special place for those interested in photography.

Bhatta Falls is located on Mussoorie Dehradun Road, about 7 kilometers from Mussoorie. This very beautiful waterfall is a peaceful and beautiful attraction situated in the lap of nature. It is not a very famous tourist location of Mussoorie but due to being very less known, Bhatta Falls still preserves its natural form.

At Bhatta Falls, water falls from a height of 30 feet into a small pond. The view around Bhatta Falls is very attractive. Tourists can also reach the falls by ropeway. There is no entry ticket for Bhatta Falls but tourists have to take a ticket for the ropeway.

Best Time to Visit - Mussoorie Tourist Places

The weather in Mussoorie is pleasant throughout the year but especially from November to June is the best time to visit Mussoorie. A large number of tourists come here during summer from March to June. The temperature here during these months remains around 15 to 25 degrees.

If you like to live in a calm environment and less crowd then you can go between November to February. Due to heavy rains during monsoon, land slides also happen here.

Since Mussoorie is a major tourist destination, reaching here is not a problem. Mussoorie can be reached through all three means.

By Air

The nearest airport to Mussoorie is Jolly Grant Airport located in Dehradun. It is situated at a distance of about 60 kilometers from Mussoorie. This airport is well connected to all the major cities of India. After reaching here, you can easily reach Mussoorie by taxi or any local transport.

By Train

The nearest railway station to Mussoorie is Dehradun Railway Station which is about 35 kilometers from Mussoorie. This railway station is connected to major cities of the country by rail. Taxis or buses are available to reach Mussoorie from Dehradun.

By Road

Mussoorie is a famous tourist location which is connected by road to many cities of the country. Private and state transport buses are available to Mussoorie from Delhi, Dehradun, Rishikesh and Haridwar.
