According to the legend, during Treta Yuga, Devi fought with Bhairav Nath here and ultimately Bhairav Nath died in that war. At the same place where Bhairav Nath died, the cave is situated where the pindi forms of Mahakali, Maha Saraswati and Maha Lakshmi are present. According to the story, when Bhairav Nath died, his head was cut and fell 3 kilometers away from where the temple of Bhairav Nath now stands.
