Bilkeshwar Mahadev Mandir is an ancient temple located in Haridwar. Due to the location of this temple on the Bilva mountain, its name is actually Bilvakeshwar Mandir, but now this temple is known as Bilkeshwar Mandir. Bilkeshwar Mahadev Mandir as the name suggests is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Mahadev i.e. Lord Shiva.

Many popular stories related to Bilkeshwar Mandir are told. First of all, the mention of Bilkeshwar comes in Kedarkhand of Skanda Purana. It is believed that this temple has been here for unknown times. It is believed that this place has been the abode of Goddess Parvati thousands of years ago.
The story of Bilkeshwar Mandir begins after the Daksha Mahadev Mandir in Kankhal. According to mythology, Goddess Sati sacrificed her life by jumping into the fire of Yagya organized by her father Daksha after being insulted by her father. After that she was born as Parvati in the house of Himnaresh. Parvati wanted to have Lord Shiva as her husband when she grew up and that is why she did penance to please Lord Shiva at the behest of Sage Narada.
It is said that during that period Parvati had eaten wood apple leaves for 12 years. During this time she used to live in a cave located here. Pleased with her penance, Lord Shiva appeared to her in the form of a branch of a tree and blessed her with marriage.
There is Gauri Kund located near Bilkeshwar Mandir and a story related to it is very popular. It is said that once after satiating her hunger by eating betel leaves, Parvati felt very thirsty, then on the request of the gods, Brahma gave her water from his Kamandal, which she found in the form of a pool. It is believed that Parvati used the water of this kund during her penance. One name of Parvati is Gauri and this kund is called Gauri Kund after her name only.

Bilkeshwar Mandir is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Lord Shiva has a special importance in Hindu religion. Like other temples of Lord Shiva, the temple is also a center of faith for the devotees. Married couples often come to the Bilkeshwar Mandir to wish for a child. Devotees bathe in the water of Gauri Kund located near the temple. The water of Gauri Kund is considered as sacred as the water of the Ganga.

Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are worshiped in this temple. Two temples of Lord Shiva are situated in the temple complex, one of them is Mahadev Mandir where Lord Shiva is worshiped in the form of a Shivling. A Bael (Wood Apple) tree is also situated in the temple. Another temple of Lord Shiva is situated in the temple complex which was established by Adi Guru Shankaracharya. Apart from the main temple in the temple complex, Devi Mandir, Ganesh Mandir and Nava Griha Mandir are also located here. There is also a small shop outside the temple to buy prasad and flowers etc.

This temple remains open for devotees throughout the year. Aarti is performed in the Bilkeshwar Mandir at 5 in the morning and at 6 in the evening. Jalabhishek of Shivling installed in Bilkeshwar Mandir is done everyday with the water of Gauri Kund.
