 Devi Shakti Mandir is a place of religious importance place of Uttarkashi. Religiously, it is one of the holy places of worship of Hindu religion. This is a Shakti Peeth. The word Shakti is used for Goddess Parvati. This Devi Shakti Temple dedicated to the Shakti form of Hindu Goddess Parvati.

Devi Shakti Temple established in the lap of the Himalayas is situated in the premises of Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Uttarkashi. Devotees keep coming here for darshan throughout the year. Navratri, the nine days in the Hindu calendar that hold special significance for the worship/worship of Goddess Shakti, attracts devotees from far and wide to offer prayers.


Devi Shakti Mandir, Uttarkashi

One of the main tourist attractions of Uttarakhand is Devi Shakti Temple of Uttarkashi. This is a small temple located in the courtyard of Kashi Vishwanath Temple of Uttarkashi, which has great importance in Hinduism. The main attraction of this temple is a trishul / trident located here.

It is believed and said about this Trishul that this has always been established here. There is no description about when it was established here, but many mythological stories related to it are prevalent. It is said that this Trishul is so special that no one can move it even with all their might and one can feel its vibration by just touching it with a finger. This Trishul is very special in itself and it is believed that it is the Trishul of Goddess Durga which is situated here since time immemorial.

Why Name Devi Shakti Temple ?

It is said about Devi Shakti Temple Uttarkashi that the Trishul located here is the symbol of the battle between the dev and the demons in mythological times. In that war between the deities and the asuras, the deities were getting defeated and then Indra, the king of the deities, used this trident of Goddess Shakti on the asuras. Since then this Trishul is located here. Because of the trident of Goddess Shakti, this temple is also called Devi Shakti Temple or Trishul Temple. There are two parts of this Trishul, one part is Dand and the other part is Falak.

Why Devi Shakti Temple Trishul is special ?

Goddess Shakti Temple Trishul is considered special. This trident is about 26 feet high. This Trishul is believed to be made of special Ashtadhatu. The height of this particular trishul is 26 feet from the ground, nothing can be said about how deep this trishul goes. In mythology, the earth is said to be situated on Sheshnag and it is said that this Trishul is established in the earth to an infinite depth.

Devi Shakti Temple Related Mythology and History 

Many stories are told about the Trishul temple. It is said about this temple that it was established by sage Parshuram. This trishul is said to be made in Naga style. It is also believed that this Trishul was used by Goddess Shakti in the Dev-Asur Sangram and then got established here in this Shakti Stambh of Uttarkashi.

In one of the many stories related to this trishul, it is also said that in mythological times, the deities started losing to the asuras in the Dev-Asura battle, then they remembered Goddess Bhagwati, then the king of the gods, Indra, killed the asuras with this trishul / trident. 

About 250 years ago, when the Gorkhas invaded the Garhwal state and reached here after winning, they were surprised to see this huge trishul. They wanted to take it with them and therefore tried hard to displace this huge Trishul from here but did not get any success. According to the residents here, the Gorkhas tried to extract the Trishul from here by digging very deep but they could not find the other end of the Trishul.

Worship Time in Devi Shakti Temple, Uttarkashi

This temple remains open for darshan from 5 am to 1 pm and from 4 pm to 8 pm in the evening. This temple is situated in the premises of Kashi Vishwanath temple. Devotees can go inside for darshan. There are various shops in front of its main gate to purchase the worship material .

Devi Shakti Temple , Uttarkashi Festivals and Occasions 

There is a special aarti every day in the morning and evening in the Devi Shakti temple and many devotees come here to attend it. Navratri is a special 9 day period of the Hindu calendar in which Goddess Shakti is worshipped. At that occasion,  the Devi temples located all over India are filled with devotees. Jagran is organized here during Navratri, in which devotees stay awake whole night and worship the goddess. Dussehra is also a big festival and special programs and prayers are organized here.

The nearest airport to reach Devi Shakti Temple Uttarkashi is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun. The distance of 140 km from Dehradun to Uttarkashi can be covered by taxi or bus by road. On reaching Uttarkashi, you can take taxis or rickshaws from within the city to reach the temple.

By Train

To reach Devi Shakti Temple Uttarkashi, one can reach here by road from the railway station of Dehradun or Rishikesh. Dehradun and Rishikesh are well connected by the railway network of India. Direct or connected rail service is available from the main stations of the country to Dehradun and Rishikesh.

By Road
