Drona Sagar Kashipur - related Stories
The name of this lake is Drona Sagar after the name of Dronacharya, the guru of Pandavas and Kauravas. According to the legend, after the completion of their education, the Pandavas wanted to give some gurudakshina to Guru Dronacharya. To give him gurudakshina, together they built this lake and called it Drona Sagar after the name of their Guru.
It is also believed that Drona Sagar has always been the place of penance for sages. Sage Vashishtha also performed his penance here during the Ramayana period. Before him the ashram of sage Kashyap was situated here. During the Mahabharata period, Guru and sage Drona had done penance here for a long time and hence the place was named Drona Sagar.
Later, during the period of propagation of Buddhism, this place became the center of Buddhist culture. Saint Tulsidas who wrote Ramcharitmanas, also meditated here for a few months and Swami Dayanand Saraswati also came here to spend time for spiritual peace.
Guru Dronacharya is considered the best teacher. In his name, the Dronacharya Award is given to the best coaches and gurus in athletics and sports in India.
