Moteshwar Mahadev Mandir is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Kashipur. Kashipur is an ancient city which is considered to be a city of historical and religious importance. Kashipur was known as the ashram of sage Kashyapa which was later chosen by sage Vashishtha in the Ramayana period and Guru Drona in the Mahabharata period as his ashram.

It is believed that Dronacharya, the guru of the Kauravas and Pandavas, who was teaching them in the ashram located nearby, found this Shivling here one day. Bhima established the area of this Shivling as a temple and presented this Moteshwar Shivling temple to Guru Drona as Dakshina.
Another story related to this temple which is very popular is about its height. To see the Shivling in Moteshwar temple one has to go to the second floor of the temple, although this Shivling has emerged from the ground itself. It is said that for a time this Shivling was continuously increasing in height. Earlier, Shivling could be seen in this temple only on the ground floor of the temple, but later due to increasing height of Shivling, darshan was started from the second floor.

Why name Moteshwar Mahadev Mandir
The thickness of Shivling located in Moteshwar Mahadev temple is very surprising. This Shivling is such in size that it cannot be surrounded even with both the hands. Due to being thick in size, this Shivling is called Moteshwar.
Bheemashankar Mandir Kashipur
Another name of this temple is Bhima Shankar Temple. The establishment of this temple is believed to be by Bhim, hence the other name of this temple is Bhima Shankar Temple, named after Bhim. It is believed that this temple is a 5000 year old temple which was established during the Mahabharata period. It is said that there were about 120 Shiva temples surrounding this temple but now only this is the main temple.

The temple remains open for darshan from 5.30 am to 12.00 noon and from 4.30 pm to 8.30 pm in the evening.

Moteshwar Temple is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Devotees throng here in large numbers on the occasion of Shivratri and Mahashivaratri, which fall in the month of Sawan. On the occasion of Shivratri that falls in the month of Sawan, devotees do Jalabhishek of this Shivling by bringing water from river Ganga from Haridwar by going to Kanwan Yatra.

Weather is very hot in Kashipur from April to June. From June onwards the weather becomes pleasant, specially from July. If you want to come to Moteshwar Mahadev Mandir and participate in the festival of Shivratri of Sawan, then you should come here for darshan on the occasion of Shivratri during July-August. One can participate in the festivities here on the occasion of Mahashivaratri in the month of February. Apart from this, the Moteshwar temple remains open for devotees to visit throughout the year anyway.

Moteshwar Mahadev Mandir is the main attraction of Kashipur for Shiva worshippers, but apart from this temple, there are some other places of historical and religious importance in Kashipur. Drona Sagar is a famous attraction of Kashipur which was the Gurukul of Kauravas and Pandavas during Mahabharata period. It is believed that Drona Sagar was a pond built by Pandavas which was given by Pandavas to Guru Drona as Guru Dakshina.
A few steps away from the Moteshwar Mahadev Mandir is the famous Devi temple, also known as the Chaiti temple. A famous fair is held here in the month of Chaitra, the new year according to the Hindu calendar, and a large number of devotees come to participate in it.
Gurudwara Shri Nanak Saheb is another main attraction of Kashipur which is a great pilgrimage for the Sikh community. Sri Guru Nanak Dev, the first Guru of the Sikhs, spent some time here during his travels.
