Why Name Jim Corbett National Park

Jim Corbett, whose full name was Colonel Edward James Corbett , was an Indian-born British hunter, tracker, naturalist, and author. He was born on July 25, 1875, in Nainital, India, and grew up in India. Corbett spent much of his childhood exploring the wilderness around Nainital and developed a deep knowledge of the way. He was known for hunting a number of man-eating tigers and leopards in the Indian subcontinent. However, he later became a pioneer conservationist and played a key role in the establishment of the present Jim Corbett National Park. Corbett was also an avid outdoorsman and photographer, and he captured wild tigers, seven in number, in a motion picture for the first time. He received the Kaisar-i-Hind Medal as well for his contribution.

The park was renamed at the insistence of Corbett's friend, Govind Ballabh Pant, the first chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, to honor Corbett's conservation efforts.
