Lakshman Jhula Rishikesh

Lakshman Jhula Bridge is a world famous attraction of Rishikesh. The bridge is named after Lakshmana, the younger brother of Lord Rama. Lakshman Jhula Bridge connects Tapovan of Tehri Garhwal and Jonk villages of Pauri Garhwal via a bridge. This bridge is the main attraction here for the tourists coming to Rishikesh. This bridge is made of iron and often this bridge seems to shake when there is strong wind. However, this bridge has been closed for repairs since November 2020 and a modern and strong bridge is being built along side of this bridge.

History of Lakshman Jhula Bridge Rishikesh

Lakshman Jhula Bridge is a bridge built even before the country became independent. First of all, a Rich of Calcutta had built a bridge here in 1889, but that bridge was washed away in the flood of 1924. The present bridge here was completed in the year 1929. The construction of this bridge was done by the then PWD department. The length of this bridge was 450 feet. It was a suspension bridge made of iron.

Why is this bridge named Lakshman Jhula?



Why this bridge is named Laxman Jhula, it is said that this place is related to Ramayana. It was from here that Shri Lakshmana, the younger brother of Lord Rama, crossed the river Ganges by making a bridge with two ropes. For this reason the bridge built here was called Lakshman Jhula bridge.
