Shatrughan Mandir Rishkesh / Shatrughan Temple is one of the ancient and famous temples of Rishikesh established on the banks of river Ganga. Named after Shatrughan, the youngest brother of Lord Rama, this temple was built by Adi Guru Shankaracharya in the 8th century. 

Muni ki Reti located in Rishikesh is called Tapobhoomi of sages. Shatrughan, the younger brother of Lord Rama, is believed to have done penance for many years in the "Muni ki Reti" / sage's sand. The Shatrughan Mandir, popularly known as the Badri Narayan Mandir, is located at a distance of about 3 kilometers from the the main bus stand in Rishikesh.

The idol of Badri Narayan is mainly installed in this temple which is dedicated to Shatrughan. There are only two places in India where Shatrughan temples exist, one in Thrissur district of Kerala and one here in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand.

Shatrughna means "destroyer of the enemy". Shatrughna is famous as a brave warrior and a philosopher. It is believed that Shatrughan observed silence in "Maun Ke Reti"/Sands of Silence and since then this place came to be known as the name Maun Ki Reti (Maun means Silence), which gradually over time came to be known as Muni Ke Reti. The idols of Lord Rama, Sita and Lakshmana along with Lord Shatrughan are installed in this temple.


The Shatrughan Mandir, situated on the banks of the river Ganga, is not crowded and is often visited by tourists and devotees to spend time in peace. Ganga Ghat is situated just in front of the temple, which is called Shatrughan Ghat after the name of this temple itself. This Ghat is famous for its special Ganga Aarti. It is a divine experience to watch Ganga Aarti being performed in the evening. The Ganga Ghat lit up with lamps, attracts anyone and that is why a large number of tourists come here to watch the Ganga Aarti in the evening.

Best time to Visit Shatrughna Temple

The Shatrughan Mandir remains open for darshan throughout the year. The temple is not often crowded, so one can visit it at any time of the day. The temple is open for darshan from 6 a.m. till 7.30 p.m. in the evening. The weather in Rishikesh is pleasant throughout the year, however, during the summer season in North India, a large number of tourists come here and you will find it crowded here.
