Bharat Mandir Rishikesh is a temple dedicated to Lord Hrishikesh in the center of Rishikesh city. Lord Hrishikesh is considered a form of Lord Vishnu, one of the principal deities in Hindu religion. Bharat Mandir is one of the oldest temples in Rishikesh. The city is also named Rishikesh after the name of the form of Vishnu Hrishikesh located in the Bharat Mandir temple.

Adi Guru Shankaracharya installed the idol in this temple on the auspicious day of Basant Panchami and that is why every year on Basant Panchami, a big festival is organized in Bharat Mandir and a huge procession is also taken out.

Bharat Mandir Rishikesh or Hrishikesh 

The ancient name of Bharat Mandir is Hrishikesh Mandir. Legend says that the sage Ribhya did penance here and conquered all his senses. This pleased Lord Vishnu and he appeared in front of Ribhya rishi. In Sanskrit, senses are called "Hrishik". In puranas Lord Vishnu is called as the Lord of Senses hence Hrishikesh in Sanskrit. That is why the place where Rishi Ribhya had done penance and won over his senses / Hrishik, that place was named Hrishikesh. The ancient name of this temple is Hrishikesh Temple.

Also the city Rishikesh is actually Hrishikesh. Bharat Mandir is also mentioned in Puranas.

Also, Bharat is another name of Lord Vishnu. Hence this temple is also known as Bharat Mandir.

History of Bharat Mandir

This temple built at the place where Lord Vishnu appeared to sage Ribhya is called Hrishikesh temple. This temple is thousands of years old and its description is also found in the Hindu Puranas Vishnu Purana, Shrimad Bhagavata, Vamana Purana, Narasimha Purana and Mahabharata. It is said that this temple was built by Bharat, the younger brother of Lord Rama and hence it is called Bharat Mandir.



Adi Guru Shankaracharya installed the present idol in this temple in the 8th century. In the 14th century, the invader Timur invaded India and this temple also suffered a lot during the invasions at that time. Later Maharaja Yashwant Singh Malvendra of Nabha renovated this temple in 1832.

Every year a festival is organized in Bharat Mandir on the day of Basant Panchami. During this festival the Shaligram installed in the temple is taken for a bath in the holy Mayakund. After bathing, the idol is brought back to the temple and symbolically reinstalled. During this festival, hundreds of devotees walk along with the idol through the center of the city.

Akshaya Tritiya also has a special significance and on that day a large number of devotees come to Bharat Mandir to offer prayers to the Lord Hrishikesh.

Sacred tree at Bharath Temple

Bharata Mandir is also known for centuries old tangled trees which have great significance in Hindu mythology. These trees are Banyan tree, Peepal and Bel tree. The roots and branches of these trees are entangled in such a way that it looks like only one tree, not three. Devotees consider these trees as the symbol of Tridev i.e. Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, the three principal deity in Hindu religion.

Bharat Mandir Museum

The Bharat Mandir Museum located in the temple premises is the attraction of Archaeological Research. Sculptures of the second century found during the excavation can also be seen in this museum. Fragmented sculptures of the time of Timur's invasion are also kept here in the museum. Excavated bricks and pottery can also be seen in this museum.
