Muni ki Reti is a well known place near Rishikesh which has always been associated with sages. Muni ki reti means the sand where sages have done penance. The serene environment of Muni ki Reti have attracted the sages from ages to meditate. There have been very famous famous sages from ancient days who meditated here in Muni ki Reti and that is why the place got its name.
Muni (Hindi) means Sage and Reti (Hindi) means sand. So the name is Sand of Sages. It is said that the place was originally known as "Maun ki Reti" which means "Sand of Silence".

Significance of Muni ki Reti
Muni ki Reti has been an important part of the Char Dham Yatra since centuries. Muni ki Reti was called the gateway of Char Dham Yatra because the pilgrims going on Char Dham Yatra used to stop at the Shatrughan temple located here and start their Char Dham Yatra from this very place.
Shatrughan, the youngest brother of Lord Rama, had done penance during the Ramayana period in Muni ki Reti. Shatrughan temple is established here at the same place.
