According to the mythological story related to the temple, when Lord Shiva was taking the wedding procession to marry Sati, daughter of King Daksh, he had decided to stop at Neel Parvat. After marriage he lived here for some time with Goddess Sati.

According to another popular story related to Nileshwar Mahadev Temple, when Goddess Sati reached the Yagya organized by her father without being invited, she was humiliated there. Being saddened by this, Goddess Sati committed suicide by jumping into the Yagya Kund. When Lord Shiva came to know about this, he became enraged with grief and performed a tandava due to which his entire body turned blue. It is believed that he performed Tandav on this mountain, hence it was called Neel Parvat. The Swayambhu Shivalinga on Neelparvat was called Nileshwar Mahadev and that is why this temple is called Nileshwar Mahadev Temple.

According to the popular belief, the fruits growing on the trees around Nileshwar Mahadev Temple are not plucked, but when the fruits ripen and fall on their own, they are offered as Prasad. The walls of Nileshwar Mahadev Temple are painted in blue.

Nileshwar Temple is an ancient and special importance temple. In Hindu religion, Lord Shiva and his wife Goddess Parvati are worshiped in many forms. Swayambhu Shivalinga located in Nileshwar Mahadev Temple is considered to be the form of a thousand Shivalingas. On Shivratri, which falls in the month of Sawan of the Hindu calendar, a large number of devotees bring water from the river Ganga and perform Jalabhishek of Shivalinga.
