According to religious mythology, King Bhagiratha, the ancestor of Lord Rama, performed severe penance to bring Ganga to earth to absolve the sins of his ancestors and liberate their souls. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Brahma fulfilled his wish and directed the divine Ganga to descend on earth.
Descending of Ganga
The incident of Ganga's descent from heaven to earth was full of great challenges. Legend has it that the flow of Ganga's descent was so powerful that it threatened to flood the earth. To reduce the impact of this heavy flood, Lord Shiva had captured Ganga in his locks, due to which the fast flow of river Ganga was broken and that devastation could be prevented. Thus, Ganga slowly flowed on the earth from Lord Shiva's locks at Gangotri, which was the auspicious moment of his arrival on earth.

How to reach Gangotri
Gangotri can be reached by road travel and trekking.
By Road
Gangotri is about 400-450 kilometers from Delhi. It takes about 6-7 hours to drive from Delhi to Rishikesh or Haridwar, and then take NH34 to Uttarkashi.
One can take a taxi or bus from Uttarkashi to Gangotri, which is about 100 kilometers away. The road journey from Uttarkashi to Gangotri takes about 4-5 hours and offers beautiful views of the Bhagirathi River and the Himalayas.
By Trek to Gangotri
For adventure seekers, trekking is an option to reach Gangotri. The trek to Gangotri starts from a village called Gangnani, located about 25 kilometers from Uttarkashi. From Gangnani, it is a walk of about 14 kilometers to Gangotri, passing through lush green forests, beautiful villages and the beautiful Bhairon Valley.
Nearest Railway Station and Airport - Gangotri
The nearest airport to Gangotri is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, which is about 250 kilometers away. Tourists can hire a taxi from Dehradun or take a bus to reach Gangotri via Rishikesh and Uttarkashi.
