The old name of Lansdowne in Garhwali was Kaludanda. This place was called Kaludanda because it was situated between Kalu and Danda hills. Kaludanda was called Lansdowne after Lord Lansdowne, who was the Viceroy of India from 1888 to 1894 during the British rule in India.
In 1887, the first battalion of Garhwal Rifles came to Lansdowne from Almora and since then this city became the training center of Garhwal Rifles. Even today the regiment center of Garhwal Rifles is located here.
During the British rule, Lansdowne became a famous hill station and people from other places started settling here. There are many old buildings and churches which were built during that period.
Thandi Sadak
Thandi means cold and sadak means road, in English language. This road situated between Lansdowne and Jaiharikhal is called Thandi Road. This road was built during the British rule on which Indian citizens were not allowed to go at that time. Only English and European citizens had the right to travel on this road. Indian citizens were allowed to go only through another road downstream from this road.
