There is no exact information about how ancient this group of Baleshwar Temples are and when they were built, but the Baleshwar Temple Group has been identified as a National Heritage Monument due to its amazing artwork and structure.

10 to 15 small temples have been constructed in Baleshwar Temple and apart from the main temple of Lord Shiva, there are two other special temples, one of which is Ratneshwar Temple and the other is Champavati Durga Temple. This temple is famous for its amazing carvings. This temple group is important for the devotees as the place of Lord Shiva and other deities, while this temple group is under the care of the Archaeological Survey of India since 1952.

The Shivaling located in the main temple of this temple group of Champawat is believed to be from the Treta Yuga ( the time of Ramayana and Lord Ram). It is believed that this Shivaling was established by King Bali during the Ramayana period. This Shivling was called Baleshwar because it was established by King Bali and hence the name of this temple group also became Baleshwar.

History - Baleshwar Temple Champawat

Regarding Baleshwar Temple , it is believed that the construction of these temples probably started between 10th and 12th century. The Chand dynasty kings who ruled Kumaon in the early period are credited with the construction of the Baleshwar temple complex. There is an inscription installed on a big stone outside the temple which mentions the year 1293.

The construction work of this temple took place during the reign of Raja Garun Gyan Chand, Raja Uday Chand and Raja Hari Chand and was completed in the 14th century. Later, the Baleshwar temple complex suffered a lot of damage during the attacks of Rohilla rulers (Muslim rulers of Bareilly).

The Baleshwar temple complex is spread over an area of ​​approximately 200 m. Many Shivalings are located in this temple group. Lord Hanuman, Ganesha and goddess idols are also part of this temple complex.

In the temple complex, the Ratneshwar temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and the Champavati Durga temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga, who was worshiped by the Chand dynasty rulers as their family deity. Two Nandis are seated at the entrance of the main temple.
