Champawat Tourist Places : Champawat is a district of Uttarakhand. From tourism point of view, Champawat city and other cities falling in Champawat district are not very famous. Champawat is a quiet place away from the crowd and noise of tourists where the weather remains good throughout the year. The weather here is pleasant in summers and during the rains the valleys here are full of greenery. Beautiful views are visible as far as the eye can see. Sometimes snowfall is also seen here in winter. 

History of Champawat

Champawat has a rich history dating back to ancient times. Banasur Fort and Baleshwar Temple in Champawat makes it thousands of years old city. It was a part of the Kumaon region, which has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Champawat region finds mentions in mythology and Mahabharat.

Champawat was part of the Katyuri dynasty's territory, which ruled the Kumaon region from the 7th to the 11th centuries. After Katyuri, it came under the influence of the Chand dynasty, which ruled the region until the 16th century.

During the British period, Champawat was a significant administrative center. It served as a vital outpost for trade and administration in the Himalayan foothills.

After India became independent in 1947, Champawat became a part of the newly formed state of Uttar Pradesh. Later, in 2000, when Uttarakhand was carved out of Uttar Pradesh, Champawat became a part of the new state.

Tanakpur

The largest city of Champawat district is Tanakpur. Tanakpur city is connected to the plains of North India by train network. It is a whole city full of hotels with modern facilities. Tanakpur city is situated on the banks of Sarada River and is adjacent to India's neighboring country Nepal.

Champawat city is the second largest city in Champawat district. Champawat is famous for its historical temples and fort. Baleshwar Temple is not just one temple but a group of ancient temples. This group of temples was built by a few rulers and it is believed that these temples were built between the 10th to 12th century. Nagnath Mandir - Champawat

Nagnath Temple, as can be known from the name itself, is dedicated to the Lord of Nagas i.e. Lord Shiva. This temple was built by Guru Gorakhnath in the 18th century. Nagnath Temple is an example of traditional Kumaoni architecture.

Goljyu Devta Temple - Champawat

Golju Devta Temple, as the people living here call it, is actually a temple dedicated to Golu Devta of Almora. In Pahari and especially Kumaoni culture, Golu Devta is especially considered the god of justice. This temple is a smaller version of the Golu Devta temple of Almora. Devotees coming here tie a chunari for their wish and when their wish is fulfilled, they tie a bell in the temple.

Banasur Fort is situated in Lohaghat city on the banks of Lohavati river. Banasur Fort is an ancient cultural attraction and this fort is also considered to have mythological importance. According to the mythological story, there was once a war between Lord Krishna and Lord Shiva due to the demon Banasur living here. Banasur Fort is also known as Bankot or Bana Kot Fort.

Lohaghat Hill Station - Champawat

Lohaghat is a small hill station located at a distance of about 12 kilometers from Champawat town. Surrounded by mountains, Lohaghat is situated on the banks of a river. This river is known as Lohavati. Due to its base on the banks of Lohavati river, it is called Lohaghat city. Lohaghat Nagar is a place to see and experience for its scenic views and pleasant weather.

Ghatotkach Mandir - Champawat

Known as Ghatotkach or Ghatku temple, this temple is dedicated to Ghatotkach, son of the famous Mahabharata era warrior Bhima and wife Hidimba. This temple is located at a short distance from Champawat city. It is believed that Ghatotkacha's head was cut off and fell at this place after he was killed by Karna in the war of Mahabharata.

Raja Bunga Kila Champawat

Rajbunga Fort, also known as Raja Ki Garhi and Raj Buddha Fort, is a historical heritage in Champawat. Rajbunga Fort was built by the famous king Somchand of Chand dynasty after the establishment of Chand dynasty. Rajbunga Fort was built about 1300 years ago. This fort is famous for its special architecture and this fort is also called the fort of Jinn.

Barakot - Champawat

Best time to visit Champawat

Although one can go to Champawat any time of the year, the weather from February to April and from September to November is pleasant. If you want to come here in winter then you might also be able to experience snowfall.

The best way to reach Champawat is by road. Champawat is well connected by road network and the roads are also of good width. These roads can also be covered by car and bike. If you are traveling by flight to Champawat, then Pant Nagar Airport of Uttarakhand is the nearest. The distance from Pant Nagar to Champawat can be covered by road.

If you are traveling by train then you can reach Tanakpur Railway Station and from there you can reach other tourist places of Champawat by local transport.
